Encyclopedias, handbooks and subject specific dictionaries will help provide useful background information, as well as terms to use when searching the databases. For example:

Use OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) to find books, journal titles and audio-visual materials in the Library. When searching for information, you need to use keywords. See below for some suggestions.

Finding Articles Online

The articles inside magazines, journals & periodicals are very useful sources of information. Articles are different from books because:

• they are much more up-to-date
• they are shorter (less to read!)
• they concentrate on topics or specific aspects of topics
• there are many articles being published all the time so you have more choice.

The library catalogue, OPAC, does NOT tell you what articles the Library has, only which journals or periodicals, so the easiest way to find articles is to use the online databases.

American Dietetic Association - promotes optimal nutrition, health and well-being. With quick links to the latest news from the association as well as an easy to use search engine.

Arbor Nutrition Guide - for information on applied and clinical nutrition, this site also provides links to universities, government and private nutrition organisations. The search will point you to general and nutrition search engines and lists.

The Crafts Council - promotes the contemporary crafts in Great Britain which is responsible for promoting fine craftsmanship, encouraging high standards and increasing public awareness of contemporary crafts and applied arts. It provides services to craftspeople and the public. View selected pieces of contemporary crafts. Get updates on current + future craft exhibitions hosted by the Council.

The Crafts Report - places emphasis on crafts marketing, and business + financial management. Provides the craftsperson and crafts retailer of all levels with how-to articles on all facets of crafts business management and related topics. Get relevant industry news, as well as information on current issues and trends. Available also a forum for exchanging ideas and concerns.

Digital Librarian: Food and Drink - librarian's choice of the best of the web. With links to just about everything to do with food and drink, from Blogs and Books to Vegetarians and Wine.

Fabric Link - provides information about the fabrics used in apparel, home furnishings, gear and other textile products. You can search by brand name, trademark, fabric, fibre type, insulation or technology. A useful site to learn about the history, production, qualities, advantages and care of all types of fabric.

International Food Information Council Foundation (IFIC) - a nutrition and food safety resource. Find the latest issue of the "Food Insight" newsletter, nutrition information on topics like carbohydrates and sugars, and food safety information on topics like caffeine and women's health.

Nutrition and Food Web Archive - for a nutrition blog, links to articles on diet and nutrition and obesity, free online books, a quick BMI calculator, and much more.

United States Department of Agriculture: National Agricultural Library: Food and Nutrition Information Centre - all kinds of nutritional information links from how best to feed AIDS patients to resources on weight and obesity. Browse the alphabetical index or the subject list, or conduct a quick search.
