Encyclopedias, handbooks and subject specific dictionaries will help provide useful background information, as well as terms to use when searching the databases. For example:

Use OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) to find books, journal titles and audio-visual materials in the Library. When searching for information, you need to use keywords. See below for some suggestions.

Finding Articles Online

The articles inside magazines, journals & periodicals are very useful sources of information. Articles are different from books because:

• they are much more up-to-date
• they are shorter (less to read!)
• they concentrate on topics or specific aspects of topics
• there are many articles being published all the time so you have more choice.

The library catalogue, OPAC, does NOT tell you what articles the Library has, only which journals or periodicals, so the easiest way to find articles is to use the online databases.

Recommended Websites

AIB International (American Institute of Baking) - find the latest industry news and other information on North American wholesale and retail baking. Includes food chain safety, education and training, as well as research and technical services on such topics as food labeling. A hardcopy of the AIB technical bulletin is available at TX761 TB.

BetterBaking.Com - an online magazine for recipes, baking techniques, product and ingredient profiles, book reviews, etc. Not all the stuff is free but you can sign up for the free newsletter.

Epicurious - for searchable recipes, articles and guides, blogs, forums and more. You will also find a very useful food dictionary and a wine dictionary, as well as culinary technique videos.

Fine Cooking - for lots of free searchable recipes, tips and techniques, advice on the best equipment to use when cooking, detailed information on ingredients, and videos on cooking techniques.

Food Timeline - for all kinds of facts and interesting information on what kinds of foods first appeared when, and what recipes were used. Find out when synthetic baby food, french fries and sushi first appeared, for example, or what the nutritional value of kimchi is.

FoodSafety.gov - provides links to selected US government information on food safety. Includes a very useful search page where you can browse from a list of food safety subjects or search via a specific topic.

Wines of France - according to this website, French viticulture has been around for more than two thousand years. Find out more about wine and food matches, how the grapes are grown, French wine categories, and much more. For wines from other countries try these websites:
