Encyclopedias, handbooks and subject specific dictionaries will help provide useful background information, as well as terms to use when searching the databases. For example:

Finding Articles Online

The articles inside magazines, journals & periodicals are very useful sources of information. Articles are different from books because:

• they are much more up-to-date
• they are shorter (less to read!)
• they concentrate on topics or specific aspects of topics
• there are many articles being published all the time so you have more choice.

The library catalogue, OPAC, does NOT tell you what articles the Library has, only which journals or periodicals, so the easiest way to find articles is to use the online databases.

Angels of Fashion - Angel of Fashion considers itself to be "one of the most concise Fashion Resources on the Planet". Browse amongst Designers, Fashion magazines, Fashion Merchandise, Online Shops, Salons, Cosmetics resources, Vintage Costume and more.

ApparelNews.net -Search for fashion updates, trade shows & events. Find current and archived apparel news. Book reviews are available.

The Costume Page -Covers fashion, textile art and costume history. Over 2,000 links to websites on costume history, ethic, theatrical costumes, organisations and events, accessories, sources and suppliers as well as other online resources on costumes.

The Costumer's Manifesto - Created by Tara Maginnis, a theatre professor in Fairbanks, Alaska. Contains comprehensive links to many costume related sites such as costume history and fashion theory. Also provides links to suppliers of everything costume-related from Armor (as worn by the knights of old) to hats, lace and wigs.

FabricLink - FabricLink provides information about the fabrics used in apparel, home furnishings, gear and other textile products. You can search by brand name, trademark, fabric, fibre type, insulation or technology. A useful site to learn about the history, production, qualities, advantages and care of all types of fabric.

firstVIEW Collections Online - firstVIEW provides fashion show photos and videos from around the world. See all the top models and designer fashions straight from the runways of Sao Paulo Brazil, Sydney, Milan, London, Paris and New York.

Solemates: the century in soles - Solemates provides a history of shoes from 1900 – 1990. "Dial a Decade" to read about that time and to see images, photographs, advertisements and movie clips.
